The project is an awareness raising action about online hate speech among young people, youth workers, teachers and parents.  Following the COE Youth Sector Priorities and the No Hate Speech Movement guidelines, the project intends to educate youth, parents, teachers and youth workers about the topics of: Human Rights, freedom of expression, racism and discrimination, cyber bullying and internet safety, campaigning strategy, democracy and participation.

Youth will be thus able to fight and respond to hate speech, both offline and online, while youth workers, teachers and parents will be equipped with the skills to monitor, protect and advise youngsters against the internet risks.

Education is an important factor to combat against online hate speech, because the more people realise that hate speech is a crime and do not consider it acceptable, the more people will report it. Though family environment is the primary context for mediating youngsters’ internet experiences, schools should be recognized as an appropriate setting for educating and raising awareness. Because of this, our planned intervention is focused on schools in neighborhoods at risk of social exclusion and with high level of early school leaving.

After a preparatory phase for the identification and selection of the participants, three group interviews will be organized, involving the three different target groups, in order to assess their knowledge and attitude toward online hate speech, as well as their competences on how to respond to this phenomenon.

Subsequently, two one-day seminars will take place to introduce the target groups to the main aim and structure of the project, to provide them with a basic understanding of the topic, and to inform them about the role and mission of the Council of Europe, the NHS campaign and national campaigns. After the seminars, one-day meeting among students, youth workers and teachers, will help to elaborate in a participatory way the workshops’ program, according to the seminar target groups’ needs and experiences.

The next phase will consist in weekly workshops involving students. Through non formal education approach students will be prompt to reflect and analyse the topic of the project and they will work together for the realization of a board game. The board game will have English and Italian version, it will be downloadable and printable, available for anyone who wants to experiment on the topics.

The aim of the activities is to make young people more aware and to stimulate them to future commitment and campaign against phenomena of racism and discrimination in the offline and online communities.

An open final event for the evaluation and dissemination will be planned, where participants will present the outcomes of the project and share their experiences with the relevant stakeholders (i.e. decision makers, local NGOs, local communities, UNAR experts etc.).
