Vienna Training SocialECOnomy: A Concrete and Collaborative Step Towards a More Circular Economy

From April 14th to 16th, we had the pleasure of taking part in the international training in Vienna as part of the SocialECOnomy project- an initiative aimed at promoting more environmentally sustainable practices within social economy entities (SEEs), while also supporting the inclusion of people with fewer opportunities into the labor market.

This project is rooted in the awareness that the environmental challenges we face today must be addressed at all levels of society. With this in mind, the partnership aims to raise awareness and provide practical training on circular economy principles, encouraging real and replicable solutions through a hands-on and collaborative approach.

But what exactly do we mean by a circular economy?
In Circular Business Models (CBMs), “the conceptual logic for value creation is based on utilizing economic value retained in products after use in the production of new offerings” (Linder and Williander, 2017). CBMs can adopt closing resource loop strategies through recycling, cascading, and organic feedstock models (Bocken et al., 2016). In contrast to the traditional linear economy, which follows a ‘take-make-dispose’ approach, circular models focus on extending the lifecycle of materials and minimizing waste.

During the training, each partner (Per Esempio ONLUS, Wisamar and OPUS) presented their own SEE as a case study, creating a unique opportunity for sharing, exchange, and learning. The applicant, Thinkubator, hosted the training and organized three intensive and interactive days full of valuable content.

The first day focused on understanding the problem: specifically the effects of climate change- through a highly engaging educational game, followed by a visit to a local organization working in sustainability.

The second day shifted the attention to possible solutions. We explored the differences between linear and circular economies and reflected on the changes each of us can make, even on a small scale. Each SEE was matched with a personal trainer who supported them in identifying their critical challenges and began working on a tailored implementation plan.

On the third day, each SEE finalized their individual roadmap/ Implementation plan, with concrete steps and a dedicated coach to guide them in the follow-up process.

Beyond the training itself, the experience was also an inspiring moment of mutual learning and connection. It was a great opportunity to get to know other organizations, exchange best practices, and work together with the belief that even the smallest changes can make a difference and help our planet.

This journey to Vienna left us inspired, motivated, and ready to continue our local actions with a broader and more conscious vision.
