L.A.B. Arts is a capacity building project implemented by Per Esempio in partnership with the Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts Al-jana. It is addressed to young people aged between 14 and 16 and staff members of youth organizations located in two areas: the neighbourhood of Borgo Vecchio (Palermo, Italy) and the refugee camps of Beddawi and Nahr El-Bared (North Lebanon).
Both contexts show a high degree of marginalization, poverty, unemployment and lack of educational opportunities. In these areas young people represent the most vulnerable group, with a high risk of early school leaving and high level of social exclusion, as well as of involvement in illegal activities.
Therefore L.A.B. Arts aims at increasing inclusion levels of youngsters living in target areas through the implementation of artistic activities.
The project follows two main and parallel lines of intervention.
The first one intends to increase opportunities for cognitive, emotional and social growth of young participants through non-formal activities and artistic workshops (e.g. video making and rap). These activities are meant to provide participants with soft skills useful to their empowerment and social inclusion.
The second one aims at the professional development of the participating organizations and their staff members. The foreseen activities (e.g. meetings, study visits and the creation of a toolkit) are designed to allow them to share good practices and improve their daily work with disadvantaged young people.
Granted by the Union of Methodist and Waldesian Churches, L.A.B. Arts project starts in October 2017 and lasts until October 2018.
